100 Colpi Di Spazzola Prima Di Andare A Dormire has been a big success in Italy, both because of its shocking story and the fact that it purports to be based on real events. It is the diary of a sixteen year old Sicilian girl, looking for a profound and complete love, but ending up in the often violent hands of both men and women, without ever understanding why such violence is done to her body. Love remains beyond her reach, with even those she ends up forming attachments to interested only in her youth and beauty. A literary and erotic read, this diary takes us inside the mind of a young girl who looks for love in others but can only find it inside herself.
Now a major movie by Gabriele Salvatores, this is definitely one of the best new Italian books of the last few years. It is the story of Michele, a child who meets another child, a prisoner in a hole in the ground. Through this meeting, he deals with his own fears, the good and evil around him, even in his own family. Ammaniti is able to write books which make you forget time is passing by. He is a real Italian talent, not to be underestimated.
Originally written in French, this comic-strip memoir tells the moving childhood of the author in Tehran during the revolution. Marjane Satrapi brings both humor and to this great masterpiece and her illustrations are wonderful. Raw, honest and passionate. Contains vols 1 and 2 from the original French4-volume edition.
With rum, music and sex, the Cuban Pedro Juan Gutierrez drags us with him into this trilogy - an autobiography in three parts, full of hunger, politics, eroticism, disillusion and good humor. Radical and fascinating prose and tropical exuberance produce crude antiheroes made revolutionary by the tropics and the dark marginality of those contradictory times. A sort of Caribbean Bukowsi or Cuban Henry Miller, writing a book the reader can almost taste. Also available: Contains vols 3 and 4 from the original French edition.
